FIREFLY HUICHOL

INDIGENOUS ART AND PORCELAIN COME TOGETHER IN A UNIQUE LAMP BY OLGA HANONO

The Mexican designer Olga Hanono, who previously collaborated with Lladró on the Firefly lighting collection, has conceived a unique floor lamp with a sculptural character that puts avant-garde porcelain craftsmanship at the service of the renovation and protection of ancestral and artisan techniques.

Firefly Huichol was unveiled at Dreamville, Hanono’s exhibition of one of a kind furniture designs at the Modigliani Opera Vision Venice Biennale, an internationally renowned event organized by the Amedeo Modigliani Foundation as part of the celebrations for the city’s 1600th anniversary aimed at promoting the work of artists from all over the world. The inauguration cocktail was held on July 9th 2022.

The lampshade has been conceived with the abstract motifs of the Huichol people, the indigenous group that inhabits the mountains of western Mexico. Its surface is covered entirely by swirling patterns of tiny beads called chaquiras, and is rooted in the rituals, mythology and mysticism that forms the identity of this enigmatic people.

While its light evokes the magic of fireflies, the foot of the Firefly Huichol lamp is turned into a unique work of art by the organic forms typical of nature thanks to the creative potential of a material from the earth such as porcelain. The delicate touches of gold luster, hand-painted by Lladró’s artists in Spain, are a signature of Olga Hanono’s creative process.

“For me, porcelain is synonymous with purity” says Hanono. “Represented by the color white, my inspiration was to create a piece that feels like sculpture. Extolling the value of the handmade, the subtlety and finesse of the design takes us back to the very essence of the art of sculpture.”

The Modigliani Opera Vision Venice Biennale continues at the Monumental Complex of the Pietà, Venice until April 30th 2023.
